About Smita

Smita Sharma is an Indian freelance photojournalist and documentary photographer based in between New York and Kolkata.

Her work has been published in CNN, ROB Magazine, The Globe and Mail, UNWRA, Washington Post, Vision Project, Proof: Media for Social Justice, First Post, CNN-IBN, Art Photo Magazine, The Caravan Magazine, The Quint, Outlook Magazine, The Telegraph (India) among others and exhibited and screened in various countries including USA, France, Cambodia, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, UK and Myanmar.

Her ongoing project on Sexual Violence and Rape in India was exhibited as part of CSW-59 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and at TEDx conference, Yanbu City, Saudi Arabia.

Besides her freelance work, she is currently teaming up with National Geographic photographer Stephanie Sinclair, adding voice to the global campaign on child marriage -Too Young To Wed. She has led the organization’s global social media outreach, increasing the audience engagement over 70 % across different social media platforms.

She is the recipient of The Washington Post Award at the Eddie Adams Workshop XXVI, George and Joyce Moss Scholarship 2013 for documentary photography and the ‘New York City Newstrain’ diversity scholarship organized by APME (Associated Press Media Editors), Associated Press, New York.

Smita worked for the prestigious photojournalism workshop – Eddie Adams Workshop as the Assistant Producer in 2014. She graduated in photojournalism and documentary photography from the International Center of Photography, New York in 2013.

Born and raised in the Himalayan foothills of Shillong City, India, she has lived in Mumbai, Pune and Kolkata for higher education and has travelled widely in India, South Asia and USA. She takes deep interest in culture and gender violence issues.
